At Ageless in the Triad Med Spa, we strive to help everyone feel happy and at ease with their body, which includes being free of pain. According to one survey, over 80% of adults experience some form of back pain. We’ve prepared a rundown of some of the common causes of back pain to help you see where your pain might be coming from and take steps to reduce it in between treatments.
- Screen time- According to one survey, the average person spends nine hours on a computer or other device each day. The longer you spend seated, especially seated in front of a screen or with one in your lap, the more likely you are to let your spine slack off and fall into a hunch. Spending too long hunched over is known to lead to back pain. If you spend long hours at the computer, remember to take periodic breaks to stretch your neck and shoulders–setting a timer can help remind you. Also, it’s a good idea to position your monitor so that it’s at eye level, as this will save you the strain from bending your neck to look down.
- Sitting- Even if you’re not working on a computer, sitting for long periods of time can contribute to back pain, as it places more pressure on your disks and vertebrae than standing or walking. Changing your seated posture can alleviate tension in your spine and spare you from developing pain later on. Ideally, you should sit so that your knees and elbows bend at a 90-degree angle, your feet rest on the floor, and your neck is upright. You can also support your lower back with a lumbar cushion if you like.
- Core support- Neglecting your abdominal core is also a big contributor to back pain. Your core is made up of your abs, but also your back, pelvic, and side muscles (and even your buttocks or glutes), which all work together to support your body’s movements. If you experience frequent back pain, strengthening these spine-supporting muscles with exercises such as squats, planks, and others can help reduce it.
