Despite its association with the awkwardness of puberty and adolescence, acne can affect adults as well. While many people are lucky enough to grow out of their acne, there are also many who continue to develop pimples even after they reach maturity. Whatever your age, experiencing acne is often frustrating to deal with, and can negatively affect your self-image. At Ageless in the Triad Med Spa, we want to help you achieve the clear skin you desire. To help you as you navigate treatment options, we’ve prepared a brief overview of some of acne’s causes:
- Hormones- Changes in your body’s hormone production can increase your skin’s oil production, which leads to breakouts. Hormone fluctuations are therefore the main cause of acne. Some women experience breakouts or in the days leading up to their menstrual cycle, and the increased hormone production that occurs during puberty is the reason for teenage acne.
- Stress- Although your body’s hormone production is not under your conscious control, one factor that can strongly impact it is stress. When you’re under stress, your adrenal gland releases the hormone cortisol to help your body handle the stress. As cortisol is released, so is a small amount of testosterone, which is strongly linked to increased oil production in the skin.
- Sugar- While links between acne and specific foods, such as chocolate or nuts, have yet to be conclusively established, your diet does have an impact on your hormone production and on your skin. Specifically, eating too many sugary foods can lead to breakouts because the sugar raises your insulin level, which is linked to your level of testosterone. If you suspect your sweet tooth is at the root of your acne, try to phase sugary treats out of your regular diet in favor of foods with complex carbs, which break down slowly in the body and cause less of an insulin spike.
