If you have been to our med spa, I am sure you have heard us talk about how much we love Vitamin A and believe everyone everywhere should be using Vitamin A in their skin care routine.
But why? Vitamin A is essential for maintaining normal, healthy looking skin. In 1930, scientists discovered that the cause of aging skin is due to a vitamin A deficiency in the skin and body. Vitamin A is a molecule naturally produced inside our bodies, but it is quickly destroyed by sun exposure. Therefore, everyone everywhere should be using vitamin A topically AND consuming it daily through fruits and vegetables to replenish vitamin A in your skin and body.
Have you had a bad experience in the past when using vitamin A products and now you’re hesitant to try vitamin A again? It could be that you started with an active form of vitamin A too soon that caused a retinoid reaction in the skin. A retinoid reaction can manifest as breakouts, redness, sensitivity, dryness or flaking. The form of vitamin A that could have caused this reaction is the alcohol form of vitamin A, retinol, or the acid form of vitamin A, retinoic acid.
At Ageless in the Triad Med Spa, one of our favorite skin care lines that we carry is called Environ. In 1990, Environ was founded. Environ started manufacturing and distributing the world’s first skin care products containing Vitamin A to maintain normal, healthy-looking skin. Environ has an amazing Step Up system to slowly acclimate your skin to Vitamin A. By using the ester/oil forms of vitamin A, retinyl propionate, retinyl palmitate, and retinyl acetate, the Step Up system can help you avoid those unpopular side effects of active forms of vitamin A. These ester/oil forms can be applied morning and evening so that your skin is replenished with vitamin A appropriately.
With that being said, I do want to mention that we offer prescription vitamin A gels and creams that are a more active, concentrated form of vitamin A which may cause temporary side effects such as the retinoid reaction mentioned above. Those side effects will last 4-6 weeks but will provide faster results.
